ROYAL AUXILIARY AIR FORCE
The Royal Auxiliary Air Force exists to provide the Royal Air Force (RAF) with additional trained personnel in times of war and crisis. The 1996 Strategic Defence Review confirmed the importance of the RAuxAF to the UK air forces. There are two RAuxAF units in the Highlands, No 612 (County of Aberdeen) Squadron based at RAF Leuchars and No 2622 (Highland) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force Regiment, based at RAF Lossiemouth. Both Squadrons are frequently engaged on operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. They welcome new members with training taking place at the weekend.
Universities Air Squadron
The East of Scotland Universities Air Squadron is based at RAF Leuchars. This is one of 15 Universities Air Squadrons across the country and is established to attract entrants of good calibre and learning into the RAF by providing flying and general service training. It is open to students from universities in Edinburgh, Stirling, Dundee, St Andrews, and Aberdeen.
