Cross Country success for Highlanders

Army Cadets from the Highlands and Moray have returned home with a haul of cross country medals and trophies. 

The cadets, from 1st Battalion the Highlanders, represented the Battalion in the Army Cadet Force Association Scotland Cross Country Competition held at Barry Buddon, near Carnoustie, on September 8.

Eleven members of the Battalion’s Inverness, Moray and Ross companies formed the Battalion team, representing the Highlands in the one-day event, competing against Army Cadets from across Scotland.

The competition was a success for the Battalion, with seven medals and one trophy heading to the Highlands – three 3rd places, one 2nd place and three 1st place medals. In the junior events, Cadet Liam Munro (14), from Elgin Detachment, came 1st in the Boys Race, followed by Cadet Kai Greig (13), from Alness Detachment, who came 3rd and, in the Girls Race, a 3rd place medal was awarded to Cadet Morgan Conti (13) from Elgin Detachment.

In the Intermediate Races, Cadet Ryan MacLennan (15), from Inverness Detachment, was awarded a 1st place medal in the Boys Race closely followed by Cadet Corporal Samuel Stubbs (14), from Raigmore Detachment, who came 2nd. In the Girls Races, Cadet Lance Corporal Galesha Paterson (15), from Forres Detachment, came 1st in the Girls Race and Cadet Keyleigh Greig (14), from Alness Detachment, came 3rd in the Intermediate Girls Race. On top of an individual medals in the Intermediate Girls, fellow team members Cadet Christina MacInnes (15) and Cadet Lance Corporal Louise Cameron (15), from Portree Detachment, both received 1st place team medals and a trophy, along with Galesha and Keyleigh, for being the fastest overall team in the Intermediate Girls Race.

Cpl Stubbs was pleased with the performance of the Battalion team. He said: “It’s always a pleasure to represent the cadets in cross country, it was very exciting and was a fabulous experience. All the other teams did amazingly well and all the cadets represented the Highlanders with a positive attitude.”

All seven medallists have been selected to represent Scotland next month at the Army Cadet Force Association National Cross Country Competition at Altcar, near Liverpool.

After the competition, Cdt MacLennan said: “It was a great day, and we are looking forward to progressing onto Nationals next month which will no doubt be a great experience.”
