Highlanders welcome new Senior Cadets

16.11.2018

Four cadets from 1st Battalion the Highlanders ACF can now teach cadets from their Battalion right up to 3 Star level, after completing the Senior Cadet Instructor Course (SCIC).

Cadet Sergeants Dylan Gunn (17), Tristan Jack (16), from Caithness Company, Ruben Aitchison (16), from Ross Company and Massey Sanders (17), from Orkney & Shetland Battery completed the nine-day course at Barry Buddon Training Centre, near Dundee.

The course, conducted by 51 Brigade Cadet Training Team, saw the cadets learn instructional skills alongside Army Cadets from across Scotland. The SCIC aims to teach the art of leadership and how to instruct Senior Cadets to teach lessons from the Army Proficiency Certificate (APC) Syllabus. Throughout the nine days the students are shown how to teach, as well as the many styles of teaching that can benefit the different cadets they may teach.

Dylan, Tristan, Ruben and Massey all built upon the instructional skills taught from their Junior Cadet Instructor Course, which they completed at Annual Camp in July, which allowed them to teach junior cadets at Basic and One Star levels. While most of the course is theory based, the end of course assessments require the students to teach three different lessons from the cadet syllabus.

They then completed a short Fieldcraft exercise to test their leadership skills. The course ended with a final parade which saw all three cadets passing and adding a further skill to their CVs.
