Positive sign for Brora cadets

24.11.2017

A new Army Cadet Force unit in Brora is looking to a brighter future.

Brora Detachment, which is part of 1st Battalion the Highlanders Army Cadet Force, is now making it easier for locals to find the Cadet Centre with the welcome addition of a sign to go outside the detachment’s hall.

The detachment, which only officially re-opened on 25 October, has gone from strength to strength attracting teenagers from the Brora, Golspie and Lairg areas.

It now parades up to 21 cadets each Wednesday night – teaching the young people leadership, community engagement and citizenship.

The detachment, which is part of the Battalion’s Caithness Company, was forced to close a number of years ago due to a lack of numbers. However, following support for the detachment to be reopened and a number of successful school talks and even an open night in September, the detachment paraded on its first night with 18 new cadets and two adults who wished to become adult volunteers.

The detachment, commanded by Lieutenant Richard MacKenzie, hopes to further increase its numbers, in both cadets and adult volunteers, allowing the cadet movement in Sutherland to prosper for years to come.
