The recently-appointed Commandant for 1st Battalion The Highlanders Army Cadet Force (ACF) has spent the last few months visiting the Battalion’s Detachments and Companies.

The visits gave Colonel Tim Martin the opportunity to meet the cadets and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers of the Battalion. The meetings were largely informal and often in the form of relaxed Q&A sessions (main image, above).

The visits also provided Colonel Martin with the opportunity to present some of the Battalion’s adults with their King’s Coronation Medal.

The start of February saw just such an opportunity when the Commandant visited Orkney. He was able to present six Coronation Medals to the Adult Instructors living on Orkney; not only Captain Browne, Band Sergeant Major Coltherd, and Sergeant Major Instructor Robertson, all of Orkney and Shetland Battery, but also Headquarters staff, Majors Barton and Durrand, and Sergeant Major Instructor Wilson.

Some of the Battalion’s adults also qualified for the medal through other routes. Sergeant Major Instructor Eric Mills of Nairn Detachment has been an Adult Instructor with the ACF for over 17 years and certainly qualified for his medal, but also qualified as a Standard Bearer for the Royal British Legion attending the Coronation.

100 Standard Bearers who provided a Guard of Honour were awarded the Coronation Medal, and Sergeant Major Instructor Mills was one of those given that honour.
