£1.2 million work to create a Joint Cadet Centre (JCC) in Dingwall is well under way.

The project will extend the existing 1st Battalion The Highlanders Army Cadet Force building, enabling it to become a facility shared with young people and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) from the Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC).

The extension will add two classrooms, two offices and two storerooms to the centre. Steel work for the extension has already been connected to concrete piles (pictured).

The existing Gordon Block and dining hall will also benefit from refurbishment. It will serve as part of the new JCC and will be fitted with new floor coverings, new lighting and new sanitary ware. It will also be freshly decorated.

The project is very different from other JCC projects in that the entire site is below the water table, resulting in the need for nine metre deep piles drilled into the ground to support the new extension. Multiple services will also have to be rerouted.

Dundee-based architecture and interior design firm Andrew Black Design will deliver the project. Earlier this year the firm signed the Armed Forces Covenant – a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly. By signing the Armed Forces Covenant, it has become one of the 11,500+ organisations to pledge support to the Armed Forces community.

It has also received the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Bronze Award.

The ERS Awards encourage employers to support Defence and inspire others to do the same. The prestigious Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards are for employer organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to Defence and the Armed Forces community, and align their values with the Covenant.

Andrew Black Design has previously worked with the Highland RFCA Estates team on multiple projects to upgrade buildings and infrastructure across our Estate.

The project is due for completion in August. Look out for further updates as the extension takes shape.
