An Army Cadet has been given the honour of assisting the Lord Lieutenant of Moray, Major General Seymour Munro, in his duties as Her Majesty The Queen’s appointed representative to the area.

Cadet Corporal Bethany Young (17), from 1st Battalion the Highlanders’ Elgin Detachment, was appointed to the year-long appointment as Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet of Moray in a presentation held at Grant Park, Forres.

Cpl Young has been a member of the Army Cadet Force since September 2016. Over her time with the cadets she has attempted to take part in everything available to a cadet in the ACF. That includes several competitions, ranging from shooting to representing the Battalion in the ACFA Scottish 5-a-side Football Competition.

For the majority of her cadet career Bethany has been part of Forres Detachment. However, due to Forres Drill Hall, where Forres Detachment meet, currently being closed for refurbishment she has temporary transferred to Elgin along with other cadets of Forres to allow the continuation of their cadet training. Over lockdown she was still able to continue with some parts of her training due to a lot of Army Cadet training being delivered online.

During that time she managed to complete the Junior Cadet Instructor Course which now allows her to teach junior cadets up to and including 1 Star.

Bethany was presented with her certificate of appointment following the conclusion of her very first event with the Lord Lieutenant, which was to present local Forres resident Mary Nelson a British Empire Medal for her services to helping homeless people in Moray.

As the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet, Bethany will attend events the Lord Lieutenant of Moray attends in his capacity as the Queen’s Representative to the County of Moray. Cpl Young takes over the position from fellow Elgin Army Cadet Jakub Bialkowski who reached the upper age limit of the organisation in April.
