This weekend saw the commemoration by the Gordon Highlanders of the Regiment’s 19 Victoria Cross holders.

The event took place in Buckie, Banffshire, where Private George McIntosh VC lived and is buried.

The day’s events began with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the town by his daughter Grace McIntosh and the Lord Lieutenant Mrs Clare Russell CVO. This was followed by a parade and memorial service in Linzee Gordon Park.

The salute was taken by the Lord Lieutenant, who was accompanied by Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet, Cadet Warrant Officer Esther Smith (19) of the Air Training Corps. Esther hopes to have a career as a pilot and has just achieved her pilot’s licence.

As a former Gordon Highlander, Highland RFCA’s Chief Executive Mark Dodson was at the day’s commemoration, as was the Association’s Southern Area Chairman, Lt Col Gilly Moncur.

The event was also supported by 7 SCOTS.

Mike McDonald, the Secretary of the VC Commemorative Committee, is also Detachment Commander of the Falkirk Detachment of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Battalion ACF, pictured here with Lt Col Gilly Moncur, HRFCA Southern Area Chairman and Deputy Commandant Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Battalion ACF.
