Army Cadets from Thurso and Castletown spent a recent training evening learning about the local emergency services.
The cadets from 1st Battalion the Highlanders’ Thurso and Castletown Detachments visited Thurso Fire Station to learn about the role of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service within the local community.
The visit was organised as part of the ‘Cadet and the Community’ section of their cadet training syllabus, which aims to promote citizenship and develop better individuals in the future.
The cadets received a tour of the station – which is the UK mainland’s most northerly and manned by mostly retained personnel – as well as getting the chance to sit in a fire engine. The cadets also received a demonstration of the use of the hoses, and got a chance to roll them out.
The cadets were also told about the procedure the retained firefighters follow when their pagers go off.
Following the visit Thurso Detachment Commander, Staff Sergeant Instructor Stuart Taggart (30), said: “We learned all about what happens at the station. A massive thanks to Kev, Mark and Carl for giving up their time.”
