Cadets holding Young Leaders Certificates

Six cadets from 1st Battalion the Highlanders have boosted their CVs with Vocational Qualifications that the organisation offers.

Cadet Colour Sergeant Louise Curtis (16), Cadet Sergeant Max Scott (16), Cadet Corporal Ben Hayllar (15), Cadet Lance Corporal Mitchell Collie (15) and Cadet Lance Corporal Curtis Dickson (14), from Elgin Detachment, and Cadet Kacper Szymanski (14), from Dingwall Detachment, were awarded various qualifications through the Cadet Force Qualifications Organisation.

CSgt Curtis and Sgt Scott were both awarded BTEC Level 2 Certificates in Teamwork and Personal Development. The internationally recognised qualification builds on vital life-skills in leadership, teamwork, communications, problem-solving and fitness. It combines a mix of theory and practical work and includes some practical activities too. The free qualification saw almost 70% of the work covered by normal cadet training, the remaining 30% was workbook based which required Louise and Max to attend a training weekend in Inverness earlier in the year to complete. The CVQO-led qualification is equivalent to a SCQF Level 5 Qualification with the SQA.

Cpl Hayllar, LCpl Collie, LCpl Dickson and Cdt Szymanski were awarded their ILM Level 2 Award for Young Leaders. The qualification, also equivalent to a SCQF Level 5, was completed as part of a Young Leaders course they attended earlier in the year. Completed over two days the course included a combination of practical leadership activities and classroom-based theory lessons. The course, aimed at 14-16 year old cadets, is designed to challenge them to unlock their leadership potential and covers topic areas such as: leadership styles, team development, problem solving, setting SMART objectives and using SWOT analysis. Throughout the weekend Ben, Mitchell, Curtis and Kacper were assessed on their written work, observations made by an instructor, peer feedback and self-assessment.

All six cadets were awarded their certificates by the Battalion’s Deputy Commandant (Adults) Lt Col Mike MacDonald who is also the Battalion’s Vocational Qualification Officer.
