A Cadet Force Adult Volunteer from Forres has had his dedicated service to the young people of Moray recognised.

Staff Sergeant Instructor Leonard Cowieson (70), from 1st Battalion The Highlanders’ Forres Detachment, was presented with a Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Service, by the Lord-Lieutenant of Moray, Major General Seymour Monro CBE, LVO.

SSI Cowieson joined the Army Cadet Force in October 2006 as an instructor with Moray Company’s Nairn Detachment, later transferring to Elgin Detachment to assist in 2008. In October that year he was appointed Moray’s Cadet Administrative Assistant. As the Company CAA his duties included requesting uniform for the cadets of the Company’s six detachments, ensuring each detachment’s building was maintained and ensuring equipment for training events was available. In 2010 he took a step back from being a CAA and became a Detachment Instructor once again, this time at Moray’s Culloden Detachment. In 2013 Leonard transferred to teach at Forres Detachment. He was appointed as the Detachment’s Commander earlier this year.

On top of his Detachment duties, he is also a qualified Adventure Training (AT) instructor through the cadets and holds various qualifications in skiing and hillwalking. He makes sure the cadets take full advantage of his knowledge by attending AT weekends that the Battalion holds.

The presentation, which took place on November 22 at the Drill Hall in Forres, saw the Lord-Lieutenant present SSI Cowieson with his certificate in front of the cadets of Forres Detachment (pictured).
