The Lord-Lieutenant of The Western Isles, Mr Sandy Matheson OBE, presided over the official opening of the new home of the Isle of the Harris Detachment 1st of Monday 17th Battalion The Highlanders Army Cadet Force on the evening March 2014.
This fantastic new space is adjacent to the Tarbert Community Hall which Highland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association has provided in close association with the Harris Mutual Improvement Association Committee. Col Angus Taverner, Chairman of HRFCA spoke of the contributions the Army Cadet Force makes to the lives of young people.
Major Norman MacLeod spoke of his pride in the detachment and particularly in the Detachment Commander Lt Tim Martin, a very popular face on the island, who was responsible for starting the detachment seven years ago. Along with the other Adult Volunteers from across the islands’ various detachments, the cadets hosted stands demonstrating weapons and shooting; fieldcraft; expeditions and navigation and first aid.
