Robert Gordon’s College Piping Instructor Jason Sumner has been shortlisted as a finalist in not one but two categories in the Scottish Veterans Awards 2023.

He has been nominated in the Role Model of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award categories.

After serving in the Armed Forces for 27 years, Mr Sumner (pictured) joined the College in Aberdeen in 2014 where he has since helped the Combined Cadet Force Pipe Band evolve to have over 160 pupils from across the College.

Mr Sumner said: “Last week I was humbled to receive communication to say congratulations as I have been shortlisted as a finalist in two categories.

“Nothing makes me prouder than the growth and progression of RGC Pipe Band over the last nine years. To see it evolve and flourish into the established band it is today, alongside the musical and personal development of our young pipers and drummers has been the highlight of my working life.”

Staff, pupils, parents, governors and members of the wider Robert Gordon’s community submitted testimonials in support of Mr Sumner’s nomination.

Colleague and Contingent Commander CCF Wg Cdr Dan Montgomery said: “Aided by the strong team of instructors he has built up, WO1 Sumner has dramatically increased numbers of pupils learning the bagpipes and drums, aged 9-18, with several bands now operating at a very high level. He can rightly be proud of being responsible for one of the greatest success stories of the College in recent years.

“He is second to none in his ability to lead, to enthuse and to inspire even the youngest musician. This he does by example, with the Army Core Values always in mind.

“He has become fully involved in the life of the school, as a CCF instructor and administrator and in many other ways, for example raising significant amounts of money for military charities, serving on the Wellbeing Committee and playing a vital role during the COVID pandemic.”

The Scottish Veterans Awards recognises veterans in Business, Fitness, Sport and the wider community. The awards ceremony will be held in Edinburgh on April 19th.
