STEM challenge winner Cadets

RAF Air Cadets from Stornoway scooped top prize in the First Lego League ‘City Shaper’ Western Isles Regional Tournament.

The global STEM challenge for children aged from 9-16 years took place at Lews Castle College on the Isle of Lewis.

It was the culmination of months of hard work that saw teams building and programming their Lego Mindstorm robots and carrying out a research project.

The robots then battled it out during ‘Robot Challenge’ games on a pre-built Lego arena with numerous obstacles that the robots had been programmed to work on.

As well as equipping school children with STEM related knowledge and skills, the competition helps to instil the core values of teamwork, innovation, fun, discovery and inclusion.

As a result of the high level of the competition both the Cadets from 1731 (Isle of Lewis) Sqn and the second placed team from Sir E Scott School on Harris will be participating in the National Finals in Perth on 29 February where teams will compete for places in World Finals in either Greece, the USA or Brazil.
