Certificates for young leaders

18.10.2019

A pair of Portree Army Cadets have been awarded vocational qualifications.

Cadet Lance Corporal Rowan Leighton and Cadet Rebecca Jones, from 1st Battalion the Highlanders’ Portree Detachment, received their ILM Level 2 Award for Young Leaders.

Rowan and Rebecca completed the qualification, equivalent to a SCQF Level 5, as part of a Young Leaders course they attended earlier this year.

The course was delivered by the cadet force’s own qualification body – the Cadet Vocational Qualification Organisation. It took place over two days and included a combination of practical leadership activities and classroom-based theory lessons.

The course is aimed at 14 to 16-year-old cadets and is designed to challenge them to unlock their leadership potential and covers topic areas such as: leadership styles, team development, problem solving, setting SMART objectives and using SWOT analysis. Throughout the weekend both Rowan and Rebecca were assessed on their written work, observations made by an instructor, peer feedback and self-assessment.

Both cadets were awarded their certificates by the Battalion’s Deputy Commandant (Adults) Lt Col Mike MacDonald in front of their fellow Portree cadets.
