Highlanders crowned Scottish swim champions

Highland Army Cadets enjoyed a successful weekend of representing the Highlands & Islands in Scottish Swimming. 

Twenty-one cadets from 1st Battalion the Highlanders took part in the Army Cadet Force Association (ACFA) Scotland Swimming Championships, held at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow on 5 October.

The team was made up of cadets from the battalion’s Caithness, Inverness, Ross and Western Isles Companies and competed against Army Cadets units from across Scotland.

Overall the battalion had an excellent day, with the team returning north with an impressive haul of medals and trophies, including the Scottish Champion Trophy which was jointly won with Glasgow & Lanarkshire Army Cadet Force.

Cadet Matthew Murphie (15), from Aviemore Detachment, came second in the Senior Boys’ Butterfly, while fellow Aviemore Cadet Harvey Richards (13) won the Junior Boys’ Backstroke, while Harvey’s Junior Boys’ Team also came 1st in the Relay. 

In the team placings, the battalion came 1st overall in the Junior Boys, 2nd in the Senior Boys and Senior Girls and 3rd in the Junior Girls.

As well as being named Scottish Champions, six cadets from the battalion, along with Cdts Murphie and Richards, have now been selected to represent Scotland at the ACFA National Swimming Championships at Aldershot later in the year: Cadet Derek Finlayson (13), from Stornoway Detachment, Cdt Liam Cormack (13), from Castletown Detachment, Cadet Lance Corporal Karmiena Smit (15) and Cadet Corporal George Greenstock (15), from Back Detachment.
