Jonathan’s hard work rewarded

07.11.2019

An Army Cadet Force volunteer from Nairn has been recognised for his long service to young people in the Highlands.

Sergeant Major Instructor Jonathan McDonald BEM (52), from 1st Battalion the Highlanders, was awarded his 3rd Clasp to the Cadet Forces Medal, marking 30 years of service to the Army Cadet Force (ACF).

The Nairn Detachment Commander has been part of the ACF in some capacity since the 1980s, having joined as a cadet then. After taking some time away from the cadets when he aged out, he re-joined as an Adult Instructor for Nairn in 1988, where he has been ever since. SMI McDonald was appointed as the Detachment Commander in 2000.

Jonathan’s dedication to young people was recognised in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours where he received the British Empire Medal.

SMI McDonald was presented with his clasp by Battalion Commandant Colonel Iain Cassidy (pictured, above) at the Detachment on John Street.

The Cadet Forces Medal is awarded to all officers and uniformed Adult Instructors in recognition of long service. The medal is awarded after 12 years unbroken service to the Cadet Forces, with an additional clasp for every six years of additional service.
