Strong performance from Highland hockey team

02.05.2018

A group of Army Cadets from the Highlands returned home with silverware from the ACFA Scotland Hockey Championships.

Nine cadets from 1st Battalion The Highlanders came second in the competition held in Perth.

The team was made up of cadets from across the Inverness-shire, Moray, Lochaber, Ross-shire, Sutherland and Caithness areas.

The competition saw them compete against Battalions from across Scotland and, after a challenging day, the team’s hard work paid off, with them finishing 2nd overall, having lost only one match – their first – and winning the rest.

In the end, only a single point separated them from the overall winners, the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders ACF who will now go on to represent Scotland at the ACF National Competition.

The team consisted of Cadet Company Sergeant Major Lani Jones (17), from Castletown Detachment, Cadet Company Sergeant Major Corran Wineberg (17) and Cadet Corporal Nicole Gray (17), from Fort William Detachment, Cadet Lance Corporal Charlotte Paterson (15), from Alness Detachment, Cadet Lance Corporal Caitlin Shanks (16), from Elgin Detachment, Cadet Lance Corporal Katie Wallace (14), from Aviemore Detachment, Cadet Lance Corporal Heather MacKay (13), from Farr Detachment, Cadet Jean-Asha Robertson (15), from Raigmore Detachment and Cdt Emma Deakin (14), from Culloden Pipes & Drums Detachment.

The cadets were selected for the Battalion team over several selection weekends, taking place at Dingwall Sports Centre and Inverness Royal Academy. This is the second year in a row the team has done well in the competition, after also coming second at the 2017 event in Perth.
